- Conservative education policy (1979 – 1997) introduced:
- New Vocationalism 1986 (NVQs etc);
- The 1988 Education Reform Act introduced competition between schools and turned parents into ‘consumers’ of education
- New Right thinkers argue social policies are more effective if they are driven by free market principles
- This process is often termed the marketization (free market) of education
