Marketisation of education – The 1988 Education Act

These principles are evident in the 1988 Education Act because the act introduced:

  • The National Curriculum
  • National testing (SATS)
  • National league tables
  • Open enrolment and parental choice
  • Ofsted
  • Local management of schools

All the above policies were introduced to act as ‘market-signals’ – things which informed parents about a school so they could make an informed choice as to what school they could send their child to – known as parentocracy

Conservative education policies 2010 onwards
