Conservative education policy (2010 onwards)

Since 2010 there’s been an increased emphasis on the marketization of education with:

  • Academies Bill – traditional Academies and Academy Converters now have the same status in law
  • Free Schools
  • Bursary Scheme (replaced EMA)
  • Vocational GCSEs axed from league tables
  • ‘Toughening-up’ of A-levels and GCSES
  • A greater emphasis on the English Baccalaureate (Ebacc) – more traditional GCSEs
  • 2018 school league tables Schools are judged by two new measures, Progress 8 and Attainment 8.
