Evaluation of deskilling thesis

  • critics of Braverman’s deskilling thesis point out:
  • how do you define what is or isn’t a ‘skill’. For example is cleaning a skill?
  • many pre-industrial jobs were semi-skilled or low skilled
  • computers might have eliminated old skills but they’ve created a new need for ICT skills
  • Fordist methods of production have waned. Now employers seek more multi-skilled employees
  • Gallie (1994) argues many jobs require workers to improve their skills – known as upskilling
  • Upskilling – is where employers give train their employees to gain additional skills
