New Media and Social Class

  • A large number of people use new media yet these users aren’t a homogenous group, instead users are a stratified group differentiated by social-class, gender, age and location
  • Social class – middle and upper classes are the biggest users of new media as they more readily afford access to the internet while those in the poorest social-classes can least afford internet access – this is known as the digital divide
  • Indeed some commentators talk about a digital underclass of users who because of their low levels of education and worklessness find it difficult to access the new media/internet
