New Media
New media refers to screen based, digital computer technology which integrates images, text and sound for consumption, interaction and sharing on single devices like iPhones, from the later part of the 20th century
- The above is known as cultural convergence
- Examples are Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, X-Boxes etc.
The above processes create a participatory culture which breaks down old media’s reliance of journalist/editor delivering to passive recipients towards active audiences producing and publishing journalistic content on Facebook and Twitter – link to ‘false-news’ or ‘fake-news’
Some sociologists use the term ‘collective intelligence’ as explaining how new media allows users to share information to help form a global village of information
- Web 2.0 technology has enabled the expansion of this user driven content for example with Trip Advisor and Amazon user reviews
- The above new media processes allow greater user control.
- New media enables active users who help shape published content
