The causes of crime
- In the postmodern world social causes of crime are un-discoverable due to too much individualism in postmodern society, causing our society to be too fragmented.
- Every crime is motivated by an infinite number of causes specific to that individual, including emotional reasons
- Therefore there’s no one single cause of crime.
- Rather crime is a lifestyle choice, a one-off event maybe, with multiple causes rather than one cause such as relative deprivation
- For example the excitement of ‘living one the edge’ (known as edgework) is just one way people construct their identity. Therefore they’re using crime as a way of getting a kick or status in the way base jumper’s do
