Postmodern perspective of crime – revision notes with evaluative points
Henry and Milovanovic (1996)
- Henry and Milovanovic suggest that crime should be taken beyond the legal definitions to embrace societies set of diverse lifestyles and identities,
- therefore we need to be freed from the narrow legal definition.
- crime should be reconceptualised to include people in positions of power who cause social harm.
- they identified two forms of harm:
- Harms of reduction -> power is used to cause immediate loss or injury.
- Harms of repression -> power is used to restrict future human development. These include harms threatening human dignity and respect
