ETHNICITY AND ACHIEVEMENT IN SCHOOL – outside school factors
Factors outside school..
- Social class and material factors – African-Caribbean and Bangladeshi Asians are more likely to be working-class and in poverty and so have a general material disadvantage
- while Indian and African Asian children are more likely to come from professional/business middle-class backgrounds and the subsequent advantages
- Language – In some ethnic minority households English is not the main language which might cause problems in doing some school work/communication with teachers –
- but the Swann Report (1985) found language factors were of little importance for the majority as did Modood (1997) who found the high attainment of Indian pupils suggested a second language was not a barrier to achievement
