ETHNICITY AND ACHIEVEMENT IN SCHOOL – inside school factors

  • Ethnocentric curriculum – school curriculum and the hidden curriculum is too focused on white British culture and adds to the low self-esteem and underachievement of ethnic minorities.
  • Racism inside school – The Swann Report found only a small number of teachers were consciously racist.
  • But – Wright (1992) found teachers treated ethnic minority children differently to White children and
  • Gillborn (1990) found African-Caribbean students were more likely to be criticised compared to other ethnic groups committing the same offence
  • Could this lead to Hargreaves self-fulfilling prophecy or Stuart Hall’s ‘culture of resistance’?
