- it’s just adapting, taking a different more privatised form in the postmodern world
- For example church going has declined simply because people no longer feel that they have to go, and attendance is a matter of personal choice – in the past there was an expectation, or certainty, people and their families would attend church on a Sunday
- We now have believing without belonging, where people are still holding their religious beliefs, just without going to church
- Therefore the decline of traditional or certainties of religion is matched by the growth of new diverse forms or religious expression
