Feminism and religion
- Feminists see religion as patriarchal. Many feminists would see that religion tends to act as a conservative force by preventing change and maintaining patriarchy.
There are many examples within Christianity that support this view:
- The Christian God has traditionally been seen as male. God is only referred to as the ‘father’. However, Islam refers to God as Allah, without a gender.
- The language of worship is often male centred, with reference to both God and believers as ‘he’ and ‘him’.
- Christianity traditionally defined the wife as a property of her husband who owed him life-long obedience
- Jesus and all of his disciples were male
- The Bible was written entirely by men
