Feminism and religion

  • Women are also often excluded form priesthood and, and were only allowed to become priests in some regions of the Christian church recently
  • In Orthodox Judaism and Catholicism women are forbidden to become priests because it is believed that Jesus selected only male apostles, despite women being leaders in the early Christian church.
  • Armstrong sees this exclusion from priesthood as evidence of the marginalisation of women.
  • In places of worship, many religions segregate the sexes and marginalise women.  For example in Judaism where women have to worship separately to men as well as not being able to read the scriptures
  • In Islam, women can’t touch the Qur’an while menstruating or pregnant
  • Therefore women’s oppression is evident across numerous religions
