Cultural factors in relation to achievement-revision notes

  • Douglas (1960) also found cultural factors played an important part in a child’s attainment at school.
  • Douglas’ concept of cultural deprivation describes how middle-class parents, when compared to working-class parents tended to:
  • take greater the parental interest in a child’s education the greater the educational success
  • encourage their children to stay at school beyond the compulsory period
  • were better educated themselves and so better understood education system
  • more confident in dealing with schools/teachers
  • better able to help their child with school work
