Feminist Approaches to Welfare

  • Feminists’ argue the welfare model is engineered to support patriarchy
  • historically the welfare system was constructed on men being the breadwinners with women financially dependent on their spouses
  • this has meant austerity has hit women harder. For example the former chancellor George Osborne, introduced a four-year freeze on many in-work benefits and reductions in the universal credit, both these welfare reforms hit women hardest 
  • in addition the welfare model is based on having paid the necessary NI contributions to receive welfare in the first-place; as women are the primary carers they tend to make fewer NI contributions and therefore gain less from the welfare system
  • The above can be used to answer questions as to why women are more susceptible to poverty
