Media Representations of Upper-Classes

  • Representations of the upper class are constructed around notions of them being ‘well-bred’, culturally and economically superior see http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3978228/Private-pools-home-cinemas-LAKE-Rich-Kids-Britain-showcase-outrageous-holiday-homes-parade-fortune-online.html
  • These socially constructed ideas are perpetuated for mass audiences in OK, Hello, Made in Chelsea, tabloid press etc.
  • Pluralists see this content as being driven by the audience. Indeed they might point to popular Twitter and Instagram feeds published by celebrities themselves (Kardashian) as evidence to the audiences appetite
  • Neo-Marxists would see the audiences desire for such news as an ideological outcome. Audiences (passive), from a young age are constantly drip fed celeb news, making it a popular past-time.
