Work in an industrial society

  • The gradual rise of industrialisation shifted work from the home to the factory creating a clear distinction between work and home life
  • this shift meant people started selling their labour in exchange for wages
  • such a shift created a dependency on employers for individual livelihoods
  • this process also gave rise to the division of labour (where work is broken up into a number of specialised tasks
  • workers also lost their independence and control over what was produced
  • the above is often termed as the labour process – how people apply their labour to produce goods as well as the conditions in which they work
