Changing nature of work

  • Work in preindustrial society – most work was conducted in or around the family home, such as dress making
  • This meant the worker had control over their working time, involvement of production, creative production and production of goods from beginning to end
  • There were only a few types of occupations, eg dress maker; baker; blacksmiths etc.
  • Durkheim called this mechanical solidarity – because people found it easier to bond via their occupations
