New Labour 1997 – 2010
- New Labour spoke of welfare rights and responsibilities
- Such a term was a movement back towards a more social democratic approach to welfare by emphasising the reasons why people were forced into the margins of society (relative poverty) – low-pay, poorly educated, old-age, infirm, unemployed
- BUT retaining some elements of New Right principles (responsibilities = self-help)
- Thus welfare still retained the New Right principle of a ‘hand-up not a hand-out’ by:
- Introduction of National Minimum Wage
- Introduction of Working Family Tax Credits
