Types of welfare

Welfare is the mechanism through which people’s needs are met in the form of payments paid by the state to needy members of society.

The basic welfare needs the state (welfare state) meets are:

  • Social services – housing, caring for elderly
  • Healthcare – NHS
  • Income – welfare benefits
  • Education – free compulsory state education
