informal welfare provision – is welfare delivered by family, friends and neighbours providing meals, driving the elderly to doctor’s appointments, etc(though the term informal welfare is more often than not a euphemism for care by women)
a lot of welfare provision is still delivered this way to the extent Mack and Lansley (2015) note how in recent years the burden of welfare is moving increasingly from the state to individuals and households
