Media Representations of Disability

  • Disability refers to long-term physical or mental impairment which limits normal day-today activities.
  • Commentators argue the concept of disability is socially constructed because society creates the barriers, such as stairs, that prevent some people climbing.
  • In this way, stairs become the ‘normal’ mechanism for moving from one floor to another, therefore if you can’t use the stairs, it’s your fault not society’s for not offering another solution
  • Consequently disabled people are symbolically annihilated from mainstream media
