Media representations of social-class

  • Mainstream media gaze constructs differing representations of social-class in very distinct ways.
  1. a) More positive representations of middle and upper-classes
  2. b) With representations of working-class being highly stereotyped
  • Points A & B are outcomes of middle-class journalist news-values.
  • These values socially construct social-class as an outcome of lifestyle choice of the individual
  • Therefore Beck’s ‘rise of individualism’ has increased the likelihood of media representations of social-class being down to individual failings rather than structural failings
