Media gaze and representations

  • When discussing media representations it’s worth discussing terms such as the ‘media gaze’
  • Media gaze is the way the media view society and then represent their view in their media products such as magazines, films etc. For example women as sex objects (the objectification of women)
  • Media representations are the established categories and images used to portray or represent stereotypical views of different social groups. For example working-class in track-suits and those on welfare benefits as scroungers.
  • The impact of the media gaze is discussed in more detail here
  • Back to media representations of age, gender etc
