Feminism and religion

  • De Beauvoir (a radical feminist) argues that religion is an instrument of male domination and that the male authorities in religion comes from God being a male
  • Women are only portrayed as being closer to God than men in some religions if women are passive and don’t stop to question the male authority.
  • The veiling of women in Islam is often seen as oppressive to women as I can be seen as  a way of keeping women anonymous and invisible,
  • as well as showing they are property of a man.
  • However, Watson argues that the veiling of women can in fact be seen as a form of resistance to patriarchy as it frees women of the sexual harassment from men, and the objectification provided by the media.
